Some statistics and thought

uTorrent gives some stats as to how much you've downloaded and uploaded...

Since Bit Torrent is my P2P of choice these days it makes for an interesting perspective...

In the past 30 days (the new broadband connection was installed only then) I have downloaded OVER 30 GB of stuff from uTorrent alone. This does not take into account stuff downloaded by my roomies (We share a WiFi connection, what can I say we're swank :o).

This also does not take into account stuff I've downloaded from weird and wonderful nether regions of the WWW (well mostly ted.com :). This in itself totals about 4 GB.

Moral of the story? We (at any rate I) live in an extremely content insatiable environment... The more there seems to be, the faster we tend to consume it. Not just Music and Movies, digital goodies of all sorts travel through the various channels we have open, to enrich lives and develop experiences which we would otherwise not have.

But an ironic twist to this is the simple fact that despite all the large downloads happening, the one window I check on most often is my Twhirl session (No there will be no Twitter downtime jokes here, I rail against no one :o). Possibly because however cool some indie band might be its still at best a moments thought, the vicarious pleasures of community speak are much more entertaining and engage one for longer.

I've been watching the Flight of the Conchords... An HBO comedy series about a New Zealand (very much so) band in New York.

Not only is the comedy extremely improvisational and surreal, they have inane self composed songs as well :D

The jokes are mostly about the struggles of two very nerdy guys and their manager trying to get noticed and become 'a rock n roll band'... The personalities are not just very well portrayed but are actually fun to be involved in. The song and dance sequences are amazingly (and hysterically) situational.

A good time was had watching these boys do their thing.

Yeah that’s pretty much what I’m suffering from right now…

You know whatever is said and done about clichés like ‘comfort zones’ and ‘paradigm shifts’ (its always shifting BTW)… there are aspects of these which are interesting to observe in and around the people you interact with… Or with you…

It’s a very peaceful scenario to keep doing what you’re already good at, and pick up incremental expertise till such time as you can…

That is unfortunately not what happens...

Its been a good ride however… I’ve learnt a bit and taught a bit… I’ve been angrily defiant and euphorically unreasonable…

But at the end of the day, its all about the next turn on the road…

So… A purchase was made…

I needed a slightly more modern machine than the Acer, and I was introduced to a person willing to sell a ‘slightly’ used VAIO for a very comfortable price.

Ohh… the bargains to be had from the US returns J

However the saga of utter left turns and ‘change of minds’ made the transaction impossible to effect. However sanity reigned supreme at the end and I have my grubby lil paws on a not bad looking Black and Silver Sony…

Who am I kidding… it looks lovely :P

With free WiFi courtesy at least one of my neighbors it is as enshrined in Munnabhai ‘ Maja Nu Life’

I think this expresses my sentiment wrt Metallica as well... Although I first heard the Black album (almost constantly as a matter of fact, for about three months) it was their SnM performance that got me to check out their early stuff... and to say I was blown away would be an understatement...

A moment of epiphany is when Orion plays on your headphones at 2AM...

Its such atmospheric music played with so much aggression that it just leaves you dumbfounded...

And then St Anger just leaves you dumbfounded on the other end of the spectrum... Just the trials associated with being a 'tallica follower I guess

June 14, 2007 It's just so hard to find the right home for your family of 6, 168 cars and 600 full-time personal staff. India's second-richest man, Mukesh Ambani, decided the only way was up. His 60-storey high vertical palace in Mumbai, to be completed in 2008, tells an epic tale of excess - and the locals aren't happy about this ostentatious display, some calling it the "dawn of a new age of vulgarity."

Forty-nine year old Ambani inherited much of his US$20.1 billion fortune and built on it as Chairman and MD of Reliance Industries, India's largest private enterprise, founded by his father Dhirubhai Ambani, who built it up from the ground and brought in huge flows of cash in canny stockmarket plays. The company has interests in energy, oil, retail and biotechnology.

While Dhirubhai was happy to live in an unassuming one-bedroom apartment through much of his early career, Mukesh Ambani is keen to make more of an impression with his new home, to be called "Antilia." One focus of the enormous residence, which is already worth over UK£500 million in its unfinished state, will be its hanging gardens, reportedly intended to be a 21st century interpretation of the hanging gardens of Babylon. Other features of the project will include:

27 floors in total, including 6 floors of parking for Ambani's 168 imported cars - these floors are already built. Each floor will have ceilings more than double the height of a normal building.
An entire floor dedicated to in-house car maintenance by full-time mechanics
An entertainment floor including a 50-person movie theatre
Three floors of dedicated terrace gardens for relaxation
Two floors focused on health and fitness, with facilities for athletics, swimming and gym workouts.
Two floors set aside as a complete guest apartment
Four floors of living space for Ambani, his wife Nita, his mother-in-law and three children. Three rooftop helipads and an entire floor set aside for air traffic control

The Ambani family of 6 will be served full-time by a staff of around 600, many of whom will have quarters in the house.

Impressive stats, surely, but many locals are disgusted by such a vulgar display of wealth in stark juxtaposition to the poverty that marks much of the country. Traditionally, rich Indians have been more conservative with their finances. India's prime minister made his opinions clear, calling on business leaders to "eschew conspicuous consumption" and "be role models of moderation," while newspaper columnist Praful Bidwai was more blunt: "Mr. Ambani is building an edifice to his own ego. It will not go down well with the public and there is a growing tide of anger about such absurd spending."

Woah... no this isn't your run of the mill Drug story...

The interplay between the strangeness of the filming (which is almost but not quite completely besides the point of this film in the first place) and the strangness of the characters makes for extremely compelling viewing.

Especially as it was after a while that I was watching something which I hadn't either read about, knew the ending to, or had encountered in a previous medium ;)

The lovelyness of Ms Winona Ryder is so wasted in this role...

However the rest of the cast is EXTREMELY appropriate... the jumpiness of Mr. Downey is a perfect counterpoint to the manic calm dislayed (so virtuosly) by Mr Reeves...

He really should pump up on the Caffiene...
